Garden 3. Faculty of Medicine, UK

The aim of the study was to check the usability of the garden, which is part of the closed set of buildings of the Vinohradská hospital. The garden surrounds building B of the 3rd Faculty of Medicine of Charles University, which is located in the neighboring building. The garden therefore has the potential to offer students quality social and relaxation spaces.

Today, the garden is in a dismal state. Although it is shaped by a number of overgrown trees, the original compositional qualities are still visible, especially the planting of tall trees at the entrance from the street to the axis of the building. With regard to limited financial resources and the lack of a dendrological survey, we focus on the undemanding cultivation of the garden. The proposal is primarily examined for the delineation and definition of individual spaces in the garden.

We propose four sub-spaces that are arranged around the building. In the east, in connection with the school building, there is an entrance to the garden, which will be used, among other things, for parking bicycles. The southern part facing the street is used for social and sports games. Here we propose two gazebos that will serve as a semi-transparent filter between the garden and the busy street. Part of one of the gazebos is a raised platform, which is adjacent to a free grassy area, and inserted tables or ladders for strengthening. We place a table tennis table behind the second gazebo and a petanque court next to it. The use of the western side of the garden is based on the distribution of trees - we hang hammocks between the trees. The rest area will be completed by concrete walls, which, thanks to the partial disruption of the slope, will offer another option for sitting. The north of the garden is separated from the street by a building and thus forms the quietest part. We fully reflect this - the rest area offers lonely sunbeds freely distributed among mature trees.
