Opening the Smíchov embankment

The Smíchov Embankment in Prague is currently in a poor state and its potential is not fully utilized. To improve accessibility, a proposed footbridge would connect the Smíchov Embankment to the Janáček Embankment and the 14th October Square. The design of the footbridge takes inspiration from Prague's existing bridges, with an arched shape and solid beam railings that are perforated at key viewpoints. The footbridge also includes a bench along its length and is supported by a massive pylon, symbolically representing a gateway to the embankment. Additionally, there is a partially recessed structure with a stone facade that houses commercial units and public toilets, reflecting the traditional morphology of the Smíchov embankment. The connection between the footbridge and the amenity building offers two alternatives - a low communication node with an elevator or a tower serving as a viewing platform. The design aims to enhance the contextuality of the area, aligning with the nearby Emmaus Monastery's towers.
